Since 2003 Museo Eduardo Carrillo has supported emerging student artists in the UCSC Studio Art program through the Eduardo Carrillo scholarship where qualified students are selected annually to receive up to $1000 each to support their individual craft. This scholarship was funded by hundreds of Eduardo’s family and friends with a lead gift from Alison Carrillo’s mother, Florence Mithoefer, in honor of Eduardo’s legacy of supporting emerging artists. Since then, over 300 UCSC students have received this scholarship. On May 5th we celebrated this year’s 22 recipients with a reception hosted by the art department where Alison spoke about her memories of Eduardo and then we enjoyed a screening of ”Life of Engagement“, a documentary about Eduardo Carrillo’s life by Pedro Pablo Celedon. The room was filled with artwork from this year’s Scholars. Many thanks to Interim Dean Andrews, Art Department Chair Elliot Anderson, and Jason Greenberg for hosting.

Alison Remembers
Each year at the celebration Alison shares a different memory of Eduardo Carrillo’s life as an artist and as her beloved husband. This year she shared the story of his very personal struggle with addiction and how with love and support he worked through it.
